This is a discussion about the RPG rule set of Rolemaster 2nd Ed.
In one of my last campains I narrated a story arc around a lich. Unfortunately for the heros this lich was very skilled in necromancy and started to raise the dead everywhere.
For this campain I investigated the Rolemaster rule set for creating and managing undeads. At a first glance everything looked very cloudy. I started to unravel the existing rules and finally found a good explaination.
The model is easy to understand and fits the existing rule set.
This section deals with the creation of undead mainly by means of magic. Basically you have two base ingredients
- a corpse
- a spirit or soul
In the event of death the soul depatures the body and migrates to the otherworld. The corpse remains. However, using Summon Dead you can call a spirit back into this world. The spirit may possess the body by its free will. If not, you may need to use Control Dead or Dead Spirit Mastery. To permanently bind body and spirit together under your control cast Dead Spirit Binding. If you loose control over the undead the spirit is unmastered and may turn on you.
Another way, maybe the most easy way, to create an undead is Animate Dead. This can be done on any corpse and does not require a soul or spirit. However, the corpse is directly controlled by the caster and the control needs continous concentration.
If you get your fingers on a fresh corpse (not older than one week) you can take advantage of soul residue. Using Create Undead you can create an undead with limited mental skills. You need to cast Control Undead or Master Undead to force your will upon such creature.
